Coaches & TrainersYes. Nashville MMA Training Camp offers BJJ Fundamentals classes that teach the positions, movements, escapes, submissions, and training habits beginners need. You can start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Nashville with no previous grappling or martial arts experience.
Gi BJJ is practiced in a traditional Jiu-Jitsu uniform that can be used for grips and control. No-Gi BJJ is trained in athletic clothing or a rash guard and shorts, with grips focused on the body instead of the uniform. Both build grappling, control, submission, and self-defense skills, and many students train both.
BJJ classes can include live rolling, but coaches control the structure and intensity of training. Beginners should focus on technique, safe movement, and communication with their partners. If you are unsure about live training, tell your coach before class so they can help you train at an appropriate pace.
For a Gi class, wear a clean Gi and belt. For No-Gi, wear fitted athletic clothing such as a rash guard and shorts without pockets, zippers, or exposed hardware. Trial students should ask the front desk about available loaner gear before class.
No. Adults start BJJ at many different ages and fitness levels. The key is to begin with Fundamentals classes, train consistently, and increase your pace as your conditioning and technique improve.
Yes. BJJ teaches leverage, positional control, escapes, takedown awareness, and submissions while providing a demanding full-body workout. Many students train because they want practical grappling skills, better conditioning, or a new competitive challenge.
